Artist Statement

At the core of my artistic expression lies a profound sense of purpose fueled by my deep-rooted ethnic heritage and the daily battles faced by Black women. My art is not merely a means of expression; it is a bold defiance against the societal norms that seek to confine us to narrow definitions.

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant tapestry of Black culture, I delve into the nuances of our music, fashion, and collective experiences. It is the resilience of Black women that anchors my work, a celebration of our strength in the face of centuries of oppression. Through my art, I seek to challenge conventional notions of beauty and femininity, embracing the full spectrum of Black womanhood.

My approach encompasses a diverse array of mediums and styles, each chosen with deliberate intent to convey my message. From photography to mixed media to ceramics, each piece is a deliberate act of rebellion, demanding to be seen and heard in a world that often seeks to render us invisible.

In my photography series "Onyx" I transport viewers to a retro-era setting, depicting intimate and sensual scenes of Black girl culture. Through carefully curated details that include easter eggs of cultural goodies and references, I invite viewers into a world that celebrates the richness of our experiences.

In "Don't Touch My Hair," a mixed media piece, I challenge the fetishization of Black women's bodies. By painting a minimalist depiction of a naked Black woman on canvas and adorning her with a voluminous wool afro, I reclaim agency over our bodies and reject the notion of them as objects to be possessed.

"Golden Meadow," a ceramic wall bust, pays homage to the beauty and resilience of the Black female form. With a bouquet of marigolds protruding from the crown, and soft polyester fabric printed with marigolds draping gracefully, the piece serves as a tribute to our strength and vitality.

Finally, my series of death masks—each a poignant reflection on the complexities of Black womanhood—explore themes of vulnerability, resilience, and solidarity. Through a combination of hydro stone, resin, and intricate detailing, I confront viewers with the raw emotions and experiences often hidden behind a mask of strength.

In a world that seeks to diminish our voices and commodify our bodies, my art stands as a defiant testament to the power and beauty of Black womanhood. Through exploration, celebration, and unapologetic self-expression, I strive to empower Black women to embrace their bodies, their identities, and their narratives.
